About: Contact! Unload: is a play co-developed by Veterans telling the story of soldiers as they transition back to Canada.
Contact! Unload: This theatre project is part of the Man/Art/Action initiative awarded to the Veterans Transition Network (VTN), which is funded by the Movember Foundation. The theatre piece pays tribute to the challenges Veterans face upon returning from deployments like Afghanistan. Under Dr. George Belliveau, Professor of Theatre Education at UBC, the theater piece was co-developed by soldiers and civilians. Dr. Graham W. Lea and Janice Donaldson Valdez assisted in writing, directing and production elements of the play. A team of 12 collaborators, including Veterans, were featured on and off stage.
Tribute Pole: A second project under the Man/Art/Action Project featured Vancouver artist Foster Eastman, whose last project lestweforgetCANADA was featured at the Canadian War Museum. Foster directed a team of Veterans from Afghanistan alongside master carver Rick Xwulactun to create a tribute pole carved from caskets. The tribute pole is featured within the theatre production, and was initially raised on Granville Island. You can watch the trailer here.
