Calvin Fernandez

Calvin Fernandez (he/him) is a former health education executive and educator from Malaysia. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Medical Bioscience from Monash University (Malaysia campus) and a master’s degree in Medical Education from the University of Malaya. Prior to starting his PhD at UBC, Calvin worked in various capacities as a community health organizer with the National Cancer Society of Malaysia. In this role, he implemented numerous health education and cancer screening programs throughout the country, developed health education materials for the Society’s different social media platforms, and led health capacity-building programs for incoming local and international undergraduate/graduate students. As a qualitative researcher & health equity advocate, Calvin’s current interests lie in the intersections of gender & health, where he is specifically committed to using a culturally responsive lens to address issues related to sexual and gender minority health in various contexts including relationship-building, mental health and sexual health.
